Get ready to connect your domain

Read our before-you-start checklist and guide to keeping your email. Have the exact website DNS records supplied by Your Website People ready. We will give you the record types, names, and destinations for your particular website; our own domain is not a destination to copy.

This guide applies when Wix manages your DNS. Having a Wix website alone does not establish that. If your domain’s DNS is managed elsewhere, use that provider’s guide. Save a screenshot of your current settings and keep your existing nameservers and email service.

Enter your website’s records in Wix

Before adding a record, check whether that website hostname already has one. Replace only the existing website records identified in our launch instructions; don’t add a second destination alongside the old one.

  1. Open Domains in your Wix account. Beside your domain, open Domain Actions and select Manage DNS Records.

  2. In A (Host), choose + Add Record for the A record in your instructions. For the root domain, leave Host Name empty when our instructions show @. Enter the supplied IP address in Value.

  3. Select Save, then Save Changes in the confirmation.

  4. In CNAME (Aliases), choose + Add Record. For the www record, enter www as Host Name and the supplied destination hostname as Value. Save and confirm again.

A Wix-purchased domain can point to an external website while staying at Wix. Wix does not allow its domain nameservers to be changed.

Give existing records a careful look

Keep the records your email uses.

Preserve MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and mail or autodiscover records. A or CNAME records can support email or other services, so their type alone does not tell you they should be removed.

If the website hostname already has records, follow our instructions for replacing those specific records. Conflicting old website destinations must be resolved, but leave unrelated records in place. If Wix reports a conflict, send us a screenshot before making further edits.

Check with us before canceling any Wix subscription. Your domain registration, email, and old website may have separate renewals or depend on services you still need.

Check your website and your email

Notify Your Website People once your changes are saved. Wix allows up to 48 hours for DNS updates to reach everyone. Some visitors may see the old website while their network still remembers its previous address.

Open your domain with and without www, using HTTPS, and confirm the new site loads without a certificate warning. Try a private browser window and another network if results differ; a private window does not reset DNS caches outside your browser.

Send and receive a test email, then tell us what you see. Keep your email service active. We will help verify the launch and confirm what can safely be retired from your old website setup.
